Founder Donald Hess’s collection began after purchasing a painting for his new home. Years later, a friend realized that it was a Picasso—proof Hess had an eye for art curation. Driven by a passion for connecting with artists, he began formally collecting in 1966, filling the winery's onsite gallery with work by lesser-known artists who’ve gone on to become highly respected in their disciplines—we see you, Andy Goldsworthy.
