In 2019, Joshua James, a seasoned bartender with more than 20 years of experience, wanted to see how his productivity changed without alcohol. That curiosity led him down an unexpected path—one that would reshape his life and help shift national drinking culture. In 2020, he opened the Western U.S.'s first non-alcoholic bar, Ocean Beach Cafe, with a curated selection of NA wine, beer, and adaptogenic beverages in the Outer Richmond.

His craveable NA cocktails bring sophistication and depth to one of the world's favorite pastimes, fostering connections and experiences without the fogginess of alcohol. Many of James' creations feature kava, a plant native to the South Pacific traditionally consumed ceremonially or socially. Instead of slurring your words, kava helps you feel relaxed, mildly euphoric, and even a little more chatty.

That energy carries over to the menu, too. The beachside cafe has fresh eats like the Epic Breakfast Sandwich with “chef sauce," the Ocean Beach Salad with fried garlic and creamy sesame dressing, and the vegan avocado wrap.
